The French Caribbean island
of Martinique sounds like
a tourist’s paradise — sun,
rum and beautiful beaches.
But its inhabitants are victims
of a toxic pesticide called
chlordecone, which is
poisoning the water and the
soil — and inevitably is linked
to unusually high rates of
cancer. For 20 years
chlordecone was used in
banana plantations and now
more than 90 per cent of

Martinicans have traces of it
in their blood. They can’t grow
vegetables or eat fish from
the sea. No wonder they want
compensation, but who really
wields the economic power
on the island? Debra Craine
