NFL: Collegiate Bowl canceled

The NFL Players Association decided to
cancel the 2021 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in
January because of COVID-19 concerns.
The NFLPA will hold a “virtual experi-
ence” for potential draft prospects as well
as league club and broadcast stakeholders.
The Senior Bowl, considered the most es-
tablished of bowl games showcasing NFL
Draft prospects, is currently still sched-
uled for Jan. 23, 2021.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlis-
berger was cleared to play in Sunday’s
home game against the Bengals after being
activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list.
Linebacker Vince Williams, running back
Jaylen Samuels and reserve offensive lineman
Jerald Hawkins were also cleared to play.
The Bengals announced wide receiv-
ers coach Bob Bicknell will miss Sunday’s
road game against the Steelers because of
“COVID-19-related reasons.”
Bills cornerback Josh Norman has
tested positive for COVID-19 and will be
one of four players, along with defensive
assistant coach Leonard Johnson not trav-
eling for their game at Arizona on Sunday.
The team also ruled out tight end Tyler
Kroft, cornerback Levi Wallaceand safety
Dean Marlowe by placing them on the re-
serve-COVID-19 list. The three were deemed
to have been in close contact with Norman.
The Browns activated star running
back Nick Chubb from injured reserve,
clearing the way for him to play Sunday
against Houston after missing four games
with a sprained right knee.
The Packers activated linebacker
Christian Kirksey(pectoral injury) from
injured reserve and placed tight end/full-

back John Lovett (ACL) on IR.
The Vikings waived guard Pat Elf-
lein, in the middle of another injury-im-
pacted season for a player who started 43
games over four years at three positions
on the offensive line.
The Buccaneers placed the team’s pri-
mary punt and kickoff returner Jaydon
Mickens and wide receiver Cyril
Graysonon the reserve/COVID-19 list.
ETC.: Crawford retains WBO title

Terence Crawford started slow and
finished fast, stopping Kell Brook with a
barrage of punches in the fourth round
Saturday night to retain his welterweight
title in Las Vegas.
Crawford remained unbeaten (37-0, 28
knockouts) and kept his place on the myth-
ical pound-for-pound best list with an im-
pressive stoppage of the veteran Brook
(39-3), who fought well for three rounds
before succumbing to Crawford’s power.
Crawford turned the fight around with a
big right hand that sent Brook into the
ropes and prompted referee Tony Weeks
to give him an 8-count. When the fight re-
sumed, he landed a half dozen punches to
the head before Weeks waved the fight to a
close at 1:14 of the fourth round.
In Las Vegas, Rafael dos Anjos beat
Paul Felder in a split decision (47-48, 50-45,
50-45) in the main event at UFC Fight Night.
Personal memorabilia from the career
of Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench
was auctioned for just under $2 million.
The sale that involved live and online bid-
ding ended Saturday at the Louisville Slugger
Museum and Factory in Kentucky, not far from
where Bench was a 14-time All-Star for the
Reds during his 17-year major league career.

slow Ravens QB Lamar Jackson, who has
taken nine sacks in the past three games,
and Baltimore has slipped to 23rd in the
league in total offense.
The Ravens go to Foxborough and are
seven-point favorites against a Pariots
team that allowed 27 points to the Joe
Flacco-led Jets on Monday night. This is
an especially difficult matchup for Cam
Newton and a Patriots offense that needs
to run the ball to be effective. Baltimore
ranks eighth in run defense (101.8 ypg)
and first in scoring defense (17.8).
I’m never crazy about laying
seven points, so I’ll also put
the Ravens on a teaser and
bank on the favorite to just
win the game. Baltimore is
chasing a playoff spot and
playing with urgency.
The Patriots were
borderline
pathetic at times
while struggling
to beat the
winless Jets last
week.

This is not an ideal time to lay more than
a touchdown with the Saints, who just
turned in an “A” performance at Tampa Bay
and could sleepwalk into Sunday’s home
game against a crippled, 9.5-point
underdog.
The 49ers had extra prep time since
getting embarrassed by Green Bay on Nov. 5,
when they trailed 34-3 and looked
completely lost, but there’s not enough time
in this season to heal their wounds.
San Francisco’s running attack is
shorthanded and losing steam (3.2
yards per carry, 55 total yards against
the Packers), and No. 2 quarterback
Nick Mullens is not going to dissect a
defense that humbled and humiliated
Tom Brady. New Orleans ranks
No. 2 in run defense (80.3 ypg).
Drew Brees has completed
78.9 percent of his passes with
eight touchdowns and no
interceptions in the past three
games, and the Saints rank No. 4
in scoring offense (30.5 ppg).
Almost everything points to a
blowout, but the reality is New
Orleans has just two double-
digit wins and both came
against the Buccaneers. The
Saints won their previous four
games by margins of three, three,
three and six points, with two of
those games going to overtime.
Meanwhile, it appears opposing
defenses are figuring out ways to
