ELECTION 2020

scoffed. “She wants to jam
through this socialist agenda.”
Malliotakis’ campaign suc-
cessfully tied Rose to Squad-
backed issues including de-
funding the police and bail
reform that are deeply un-
popular in her middle-class
district.
Her victory reflects the
GOP’s growing sway with
Hispanic voters — who
backed President Trump
in higher-than-expected
numbers in Texas, Arizona
and Florida — as well as its
emphasis on recruiting women this
year. At least 35 Republican women, a
record, are set to serve in the House.
“The Republican Party has had this
reputation of being the party of white
men, but obviously this is not the
case,” Malliotakis said. “There’s a lot

of new blood, and it’s very
refreshing.”
She credited Minority
Leader Kevin McCarthy
(Calif.), who spearheaded
the party’s diversity ef-
forts, and upstate Rep. El-
ise Stefanik (R), who
took the female candi-
dates under her wing.
“Not just recruiting
but all along the way, by
supporting us financially
through her PAC, giving
advice, mentoring us and
just checking in to ask how the cam-
paign was going,” Malliotakis said.
“Elise Stefanik is the reason why you
see at least 13 new Republican
women coming into the House.”
“We were always there as Republi-
cans. But now we’ve got the opportu-
nity to have seat at the table.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-
Cortez’s Squad could be ex-
panding into the City Coun-
cil.
The Democratic Socialists
of America on Saturday en-
dorsed six candidates for
council seats, including
former Queens district at-
torney candidate Tiffany
Caban.
The candidates answered
a detailed questionnaire
covering the group’s plat-
form, including efforts to
defund the police, curb or
eliminate “broken windows”
and community policing,
decriminalizing sex work
and reducing the number of
jails, prisons and inmates, an
effort they’re labeling “de-
carceration.”
The group also seeks to
raise city income taxes on
the wealthy; limit charter
schools; allow illegal immi-
grants the right to vote and
scrapping tax breaks for de-
velopers. It also supports
the boycott, divestment and
sanctions movement against
Israel.
If elected, its candidates
would be discouraged from
taking paid trips to the Jew-
ish state.
In addition to Caban, who
is running in Queens Dis-
trict 22, the other candidates
endorsed by NYC-DSA are:
Jaslin Kaur in Queens’ Dis-
trict 23; Adolfo Abreu in
The Bronx District 14; Mich-
ael Hollingsworth in Brook-
lyn District 35, Alexa Aviles
in Brooklyn District 38, and
Brandon West in Brooklyn
District 39. Carl Campanile
