tripod.AsI fellintothepit
thecamerafelloverand,I
believe,hitthesidesof the
pit.I wasnotinjured,which
lookingbackI considera
minormiracle.Thecamera
wasnotsofortunate.The
impactbrokeoffthelens
hoodandwrenchedthe
lensandthemountfrom
thebody.Thelensfellinto
thebottomof thepitand
thecamerabodyremained
at thetop.
ConsultingNikonthe
nextday,theywere
concernedovermy
welfare,andthenemailed
mea prepaidlabelandthe
necessaryformstosend
thebitstothem.Theyhave
anarrangementwiththe
PostOfficefornext-day
insurance-backeddelivery.
Withina weektheyhad
notifiedmethattheyhad
receivedthecameraand
withinanotherweekthey
providedmewitha quote
forrepair.Withina further
twoweekstheyhad
replacedthecamera
mountandtheexternal
tubeof thelensand
returnedthecamerato
me,includinghavingit
calibratedandupdated
withthelatestfirmware.
I wasdelightedthatthey
wereabletorepairmy
belovedD810andlens
andthatthecostwas,in
myopinion,quite
reasonable.I wasalso
grateful for being able to


speaktosomeonerather
thanjustgettingemail
responses.Thereis a great
dealof goodequipment
availablefrommany
manufacturers,butI feel
thisexperienceprovesthat
Nikonhasthesupportand
engineeringskillstocarry
outrepairsthroughoutthe
lifeof a camera,andit
manufacturesrobust
equipmentwhichcan
survivesuchincidents,
whenI thoughtthecamera
wouldbewrittenoff.
Thankyoutoallat Nikon,
andif anyonegoesto
locomotivedepots,take
extracare!Aboveis a
photoI tookwiththe
cameraafterrepairto
showthatthecamerais
backin workingorder.

Eyestotheleft
Whenworkingwithmy
newlypurchasedCanon
EOSRP,I findI havea
problemwhenusingthe
viewfinderwithmylefteye;
I havealwaysusedmyleft
eyeonpreviousCanon
DSLRcamerasoverthe
pastseveralyears.The
issuecomestolightwhen
usingmylefteyeonthe
viewfinderandtryingto
thumb-operatethe‘Quick
Controldial’,locatedonthe
toprightof thecamera
body.ThisI findalmost
impossible,becausethe
rightlensof myspecsand
indeedmynosegetin the
wayof mythumb!The
onlysolutionis totryto
re-schoolmyselftousemy
righteyeontheviewfinder,
which is extremely diffi cult.

(Takingoffmyspecsdoes
nothelpmuch).The
solutiononotherEOS
camerasis topurchasean
EP-EX15orEP-EX15II
extender.Thesewillnotfit
ontheRP,ortheR I guess.
Canondoesnotmarketan
extenderformycamera,
sowhatdoI do?I can’tbe
theonlyRPusertohave
encounteredthisissue.

arestunning.Again,map
andcompassarerequired,
asis yourcamera.
I trytokeepsizeand
weighttotheminimum
thesedays,soit is eithera
PanasonicLX100ormy
40-year-oldRollei 35 S.
TheRolleistillproduces
fineresults,andmodern
filmis superb– howmany
of ourcurrentcameraswill
stillbein fullworkingorder
in 2060?

A rather unusual feature on shooting a footwear advert

THECOVERmodelof thisissuefromthemid-’80s
lookslikeshehascomestraightfroma veryhotnight
at Stringfellows;eitherthatora raunchyremakeof
FlashGordon[thatis quiteenoughaboutyourdodgy
VHScollection– Ed].Thisbeing1986,glamour
photographywasoneof AP’smostpopularsubjects,
andtheluckyreaderwhowonthechancetoshootthis
issue’scoverprobablystillhastheimagehangingon
theirwall.Dogetbackin touchif youreadthis...The
shoeis ontheotherfootelsewherein thisissue,as
thereis alsoa ratherrandom(andeye-bleedingly
colourful)featureonshootinga footwearadforBally.
Therearesomegreatquotestherein:‘A campaign
likethisneedssomeunderlyingtheme,’mused
adphotographerByronNewman.‘Aftermuch
brainrackingwedecidedonhorses.’A loadof
oldcobblers?We’dneverbesounkindto our
predecessors.MeanwhileKeithWilsonwasweighingup
some75-300mmlenseswithautofocus– apparently
a very controversial feature on SLRs back then.
