FINISH PINCUSHION
- Remove foundation paper with
tweezers or the blunt edge of a
seam ripper. - Center pincushion circle, wrong side
down, atop batting 11" square; smooth
to eliminate any puckers (Diagram 2).
Trim batting even with pincushion
circle edges. - Using a hand-sewing needle and
two strands of hand-quilting thread,
make evenly spaced running stitches
(^1) ∕ 2 " from pincushion circle edges
(Diagram 3).
For her version of Tiny Triangles, editor Jody Sanders
made a pincushion that fi nishes at 4" square. She
selected hand-dyed fabrics for the small pieces. “Since
the pieces are so little, you need to use tone-on-tones
or solids. Otherwise, the print gets lost,” Jody says. “I
layered the pincushion top with a thin layer of batting
and added some hand stitches using an orange
variegated perle cotton.”

- Fill pouch with walnut shells or
fiberfill. Making sure foundation-
pieced triangle design is centered, pull
gathering stitches to close opening; tie
a temporary knot to make pincushion
unit (Diagram 5). - Place pincushion unit, gathered
side down, in bowl to test fit; adjust
gathering tension if necessary to
fill the bowl opening. When you are
pleased with the fit, knot gathering
thread securely; trim thread ends.
Apply crafts glue to inner edge of
bowl. Return pincushion unit to bowl
to complete pincushion. Let glue dry.
