CUT FABRICS

Cut pieces in the following order.
The patterns are on Pattern
Sheet 4. To make templates of the
patterns, see Make and Use Templates,
page 100. Instead of a Pattern A
template, designer Susan Ache used
the Kaleido-Ruler from Marti Michell
(frommarti.com) to cut her A pieces.
(She also used it to cut the solid tan
triangles.) If you plan to use this ruler,
follow the manufacturer’s instructions
for a 9" block.

From solid cream, cut:
▫ 80—2 × 9 1 ⁄ 2 " sashing rectangles
From solid tan, cut:
▫ 71—3^1 ⁄ 2 " squares, cutting each in
half diagonally for 142 triangles
total
▫ 49—2" sashing squares
From solid aqua, cut:
▫ 14 of Pattern B
▫ 2—9" squares, cutting each in half
diagonally for 4 corner triangles
total
From multicolor diagonal stripe, cut:
▫ 8—2^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" binding strips

ASSEMBLE BLOCKS 1 AND 2
Measurements include^1 ⁄ 4 " seam
allowances. Sew with right sides
together unless otherwise stated.
Press seams in directions
indicated by arrows on diagrams. If
no direction is specified, press seam
toward darker fabric.
Blocks 1 and 2 are composed of
triangles cut in opposing orientations
from a single strip set. Because the

strip colors and strip widths are
random, the result is two different
triangles and two different blocks.

  1. From assorted solid brights (and
remaining solid cream, if desired), cut
four or five 42"-long strips in widths
    ranging from 1^1 ⁄ 2 " to 2". Strips can
be any color. The widths should vary
but the total of the widths (without

(^1) ⁄ 4 " seam allowances) should be at
least 4^1 ⁄ 2 ".

  1. Sew together Step 1 strips in desired
order to make a strip set (Diagram 1).
If necessary, trim strip set to 5" wide
    including seam allowances.

  2. Referring to Diagram 2, place
template A atop strip set in orientation
No. 1. Cut along template edges to
make a triangle 1. Rotate template
180° to orientation No. 2; cut along
template edge to make a triangle 2.
Triangles 1 and 2 will differ. Continue
in same manner to cut eight total of
triangle 1 and eight total of triangle 2
    from the strip set.
