WHAT IS YOUR

FAVORITE FAST-TO-

FINISH TIP?

Choose blocks composed
of square pieces with points
that don’t have to match.
Nine-Patch blocks are
a good example.
Susan Ache, designer
Made in the Shade, page

I cut leftover fabric into
pieces of specifi c widths
and lengths and store them
in bins. When I need to
make something quickly,
I can pull out ready-to-sew
pieces.
Jo Kramer, designer
Rustic Charm, page

I like the two layer stitch-
and-fl ip method for appliqué
because it gives the look of
needle-turn appliqué.
Kori Turner-Goodhart, designer
Botanicals, page

I reach for precut bundles
to save time choosing and
cutting fabrics. I especially
love 10"-square Layer Cakes
by Moda Fabrics.

LETTER FROM THE

E tor

s my increasing stack
of UFOs (unfinished
objects), WIPs (works in
progress), and PhDs (projects
half done) indicates, I enjoy
the process of making a quilt
more than finishing it. There
are times, however, when I
need to make a project in a
jiffy. That’s when I want all the
fast-to-finish tips, tricks, and
techniques I can find. With that
in mind, each project in this
issue comes with at least one
time-saving option.
For example, in Rustic
Charm, page 38, by designers
Jo Kramer and Kelli Hanken,
we give three different
suggestions for cutting the
1,920—2^1 ∕ 2 " squares needed to
make the project.
To save time on Made in
the Shade, page 30, designer
Susan Ache suggests using the
Kaleido-Ruler by Marti Michell
to cut multiple triangles from
strip sets.

And in one of our color
options, Around the Corner,
page 79, fussy-cut large
squares were used for block
centers instead of piecing
multiple small squares.
Another fast-finish technique
is to tie the layered quilt top,
batting, and backing with yarn
or crochet thread. The vintage
quilt Tied & True, page 90,
showcases this method.
Tying, also called tufting, is
an inexpensive way to finish
a quilt that will be used and
laundered often.
What favorite technique do
you turn to when you need to
make a quilt in a hurry? Let me
know by sending me a note at
[email protected]. We
love to hear from our readers!

I buy kits so
when it’s time
to pack for a

lt r tr at,
I have a
pattern and
fabrics ready
to go.
