ASSEMBLE CENTER UNITS


The instructions that follow result in 22
center units (A–F). You will use 20. You
may increase or decrease the quantity
of each unit as desired as long as you
make at least 20 center units total.

A UNITS
The following instructions result in
one Center Unit A. Repeat cutting and
assembly steps to make four A center
units total.

From one assorted print, cut:
▫ 2—3" squares
From a second assorted print, cut:
▫ 2—3" squares

Referring to Diagram 5, lay out print
squares in pairs. Join pairs to make
Center Unit A. The unit should be 5^1 ⁄ 2 "
square including seam allowances.

B UNITS


The following instructions result in
one Center Unit B. Repeat cutting and
assembly steps to make three B center
units total.

From one assorted print, cut:
▫ 1—3× 5 1 ⁄ 2 " rectangle
From a second assorted print, cut:
▫ 1—3× 5 1 ⁄ 2 " rectangle

Referring to Diagram 6, sew together
print 3× 5 1 ⁄ 2 " rectangles to make Center
Unit B. The unit should be 5^1 ⁄ 2 " square
including seam allowances.

C UNITS


The following instructions result in
two C center units. Repeat cutting and
assembly steps to make four C center
units total. (The featured quilt used
three.)

From one assorted print, cut:
▫ 1—5^7 ⁄ 8 " square
From a second assorted print, cut:
▫ 1—5^7 ⁄ 8 " square


  1. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal
    line on wrong side of the lighter print
    5 7 ⁄ 8 " square.

  2. Layer marked print square atop
    unmarked print 5^7 ⁄ 8 " square. Sew
    together with two seams, stitching


(^1) ⁄ 4 " on each side of marked line
(Diagram 7). Cut pair apart on drawn
line; press open to make two C center
units. Each unit should be 5^1 ⁄ 2 " square
including seam allowances.


D UNITS


The following instructions result in
one Center Unit D. Repeat cutting and
assembly steps to make four D center
units total.

From one assorted print, cut:
▫ 2—2× 5 1 ⁄ 2 " rectangles
▫ 2—2× 2 1 ⁄ 2 " rectangles
From a second assorted print, cut:
▫ 1—2^1 ⁄ 2 " square

Sew print 2× 2 1 ⁄ 2 " rectangles to
opposite edges of print 2^1 ⁄ 2 " square
(Diagram 8). Add print 2× 5 1 ⁄ 2 "
rectangles to remaining edges to make
Center Unit D. The unit should be 5^1 ⁄ 2 "
square including seam allowances.

E UNITS


The following instructions result in
one Center Unit E. Repeat cutting and
assembly steps to make three E center
units total.

From one assorted print, cut:
▫ 3—1^1 ⁄ 2 × 5 1 ⁄ 2 " rectangles
From a second assorted print, cut:
▫ 2—1^1 ⁄ 2 × 5 1 ⁄ 2 " rectangles

Referring to Diagram 9, alternate
1 1 ⁄ 2 × 5 1 ⁄ 2 " rectangles. Join rectangles to
make Center Unit E. The unit should be
5 1 ⁄ 2 " square including seam allowances.
