(Antfer) #1

F UNITS

The following instructions result in
two F center units. Repeat cutting and
assembly steps to make four F center
units total. (This quilt used three.)

From one assorted print, cut:
▫ 1—6^1 ⁄ 4 " square, cutting it diagonally
twice in an X for 4 triangles total
From a second assorted print, cut:
▫ 1—6^1 ⁄ 4 " square, cutting it diagonally
twice in an X for 4 triangles total

Referring to Diagram 10, alternate two
triangles from each print. (If you are
using a directional fabric, make sure
motifs in those triangles are oriented
in the same direction.) Sew together
triangles in pairs. Join pairs to make
Center Unit F. The unit should be 5^1 ⁄ 2 "
square including seam allowances.
Repeat to make a second F center unit.

ASSEMBLE BLOCKS

Referring to Diagram 11, lay out four
white floral 3" squares, four matching
Flying Geese units, and one center
unit (A, B, C, D, E, or F) in three rows.
Sew together pieces in rows. Join
rows to make a block. The block
should be 10^1 ⁄ 2 " square including
seam allowances. Repeat to make 20
blocks total.

ASSEMBLE PINWHEEL UNITS

Optional triangle-square assembly
instructions (steps 1 and 2 here) are
opposite.

  1. Mark a diagonal line on wrong side
    of each solid white 2^3 ⁄ 8 " square.

  2. Referring to C Units, Step 2, use
marked solid white squares and red
    small check 2^3 ⁄ 8 " squares to make 120
    triangle-squares. Each triangle-square
should be 2" square including seam
    allowances, or 1^1 ⁄ 2 " square finished.

  3. Referring to Diagram 12, sew
    together four triangle-squares in pairs.
Join pairs to make a Pinwheel unit. The
    unit should be 3^1 ⁄ 2 " square including
seam allowances. Repeat to make 30
    Pinwheel units total.

ASSEMBLE SASHING UNITS

  1. Sew together two navy print 2× 42"
    strips and one white floral 7^1 ⁄ 2 × 42"
strip to make a strip set (Diagram 13).
Repeat to make five strip sets total.

  2. Cut strip sets into forty-nine
    3 1 ⁄ 2 "-wide sashing units total. Each
    unit should be 3^1 ⁄ 2 × 10 1 ⁄ 2 " including
    seam allowances.

ASSEMBLE QUILT CENTER

  1. Referring to Quilt Assembly
Diagram, page 88, lay out Pinwheel
units, sashing units, and blocks in 11
rows. Sew together pieces in rows.

  2. Join rows to make quilt center. The
    quilt center should be 55^1 ⁄ 2 × 68 1 ⁄ 2 "
    including seam allowances.

ASSEMBLE AND ADD BORDERS

  1. Referring to Quilt Assembly
Diagram, sew together six navy print
    2 × 3 1 ⁄ 2 " rectangles and five white floral
    2 × 10 1 ⁄ 2 " rectangles to make a long
inner border strip. Press seams toward
navy rectangles. The strip should be
    2 × 68 1 ⁄ 2 " including seam allowances.
Repeat to make a second long inner
    border strip.

  2. Sew together two white floral
    2" squares, five navy print 2× 3 1 ⁄ 2 "
    rectangles, and four white floral
    2 × 10 1 ⁄ 2 " rectangles to make a short
inner border strip. Press seams toward
navy rectangles. The strip should be
    2 × 58 1 ⁄ 2 " including seam allowances.
Repeat to make a second short inner
    border strip.

  3. Sew long inner border strips to long
edges of quilt center. Add short inner
border strips to remaining edges. Press
all seams toward inner border. The
    quilt center now should be 58^1 ⁄ 2 × 71 1 ⁄ 2 "
    including seam allowances.
