ritish summer has a
reputation for being... shall
we say temperamental?
But recent form suggests
otherwise. This time last year,
temperatures were three degrees
hotter than the yearly average,
peaking at 33°C, and all predictions
point to more of the same in 2019.
But attitudes are slow to change.
We still think that sun on home soil
is to be worshipped. What harm
can it do? This is only Britain, after
all. Well, the answer is lots of harm.
The British Skin Foundation reports
that there are at least 100,000 new
cases of skin cancer every year,
killing more than 2,500 people.
Not only that, the World Health
Organisation attributes nearly 90%
of all visible ageing to sun exposure.
A simple fix can, however, be
found on your basin, as a new class
of moisturiser brings powerful
sun-protection factor (SPF), as well
as anti-ageing properties, to your
daily regimen. Here, the experts
from the Good Housekeeping
Institute – armed with the results
of lab tests and a trial involving
112 people – present the creams
that have risen to the top.

STEP OUT OF LINES Advanced Day Total
Protect truly hones in on the brief. It offers
five-star UVA and SPF 30 protection,
while antioxidants and anti-pollution
ingredients combine to help prevent the
visible signs of ageing and reduce the
appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
It’s got it all, supposedly.
EXPERT VERDICT Most of the testers
gave this cream’s non-greasy, fast-
absorbing and lightweight texture their
seal of approval, but only 60% thought
their skin looked brighter after two
weeks. However, 78% said that the subtly
fragrant moisturiser had left them with
smoother and firmer skin after use.

QUICK FIX Not only does this protect you
from harmful UVA and UVB rays, but it
also contains some potent ingredients
to improve your skin’s elasticity, reduce
wrinkles and minimise pore size. It claims
to do all this and leave your skin hydrated.
Plus, it’s fast-absorbing to keep your
time in front of the mirror to a minimum.
EXPERT VERDICT Some testers enjoyed
this cream’s rich texture, but others felt
that it was too heavy and greasy. All
agreed that the moisturiser left their
skin feeling softer, and 83% said that
they would continue to use it. Only
57% of testers, though, experienced
an improvement in wrinkles.
