What’s the story?
A long time ago Remington
used to make guns, but
the main thing it’s got in
its sights these days is the
hair sprouting from your
body – with shavers, clippers
and ear/nostril trimmers in
its ever-expanding arsenal.
This is its range-topping
beard-cultivator.

Is it any good?
With its black and gold paint
job, this whisker-tamer
looks the part. It feels like
it means business too, with
a grippy material covering
the back and a textured
patch under your thumb
to stop it slipping. The power
button’s round there, with a
locking slider to stop it going
off in your bag and shredding
your favourite pants.
The Precision Stubble
Comb takes care of anything
up to 5mm, with nine fixed

guards going up to 25mm,
but not every length in
between is covered. It does
come with a full-size foil
attachment, though, so you
don’t need a separate shaver
to go down to the skin.
If you press the power
button twice it activates a
Turbo mode, which is meant
to provide an extra level of
oomph for scything through
particularly dense beard
thickets. It seems a little
unnecessary – “Why not
just make 10 louder?” – and
even with it turned up to the
max the Remington left a
few more stragglers than the
other trimmers on trial. Still,
the 38mm T-Blade is nice
and wide, while the comb
guards feel solidly made
and attach securely.

What’s the story?
With a whopping 58 cutting
lengths, plus a webpage
plastered with pictures of
geezers who look like they
ride vintage motorbikes
to their jobs at cold-brew
coffee shops, Panasonic’s
ER-GB86 clearly isn’t afraid
of even the most hirsute
chins. You get three comb
attachments in the box, the
longest of which extends to
30mm – or ‘Viking mode’ as
we like to call it.

Is it any good?
The GB86 is solid without
being chunky. A barrel-style
adjustment dial makes it easy
to alter the attachment’s
length in 0.5mm increments
that click reassuringly into
place; combined with some
nice textured areas on the
chassis, plus robust plastic
combs that don’t flex easily,
that means there’s very little

chance of it slipping and
ruining all those months
of follicle-fostering.
The high-torque motor
makes light work of even the
thickest tufts – and while the
cutting head isn’t the widest,
that allows you to be more
precise. The attachments
fit very snugly and do clog
up with beard detritus quite
quickly, but that’s better than
having it scattered all over
your bathroom.
The ER-GB86 is entirely
waterproof, so cleaning it
is as easy as rinsing it under
the tap. But the battery only
lasts for about 50 minutes
between charges so you’ll
have to keep on top of
charging it fairly regularly,
especially if you like to give
yourself a daily trim.
