TESTED GAMES

While Star Wars has dabbled
in VR with Vader Immortal and
the free ‘Rogue One’ mission
in Star Wars Battlefront, these
are essentially brief lightweight
‘experiences’ rather than full
games. However, for those
who own PlayStation VR or a
Windows-compatible headset,
Squadrons has been designed
so that it can be completely
played in VR in single-player
and multiplayer.
Naturally, being installed in
the pilot’s seat is one of the
most comfortable conditions
for VR – and it’s even better
inside each of the available
starfighters, each one looking
as unique and detailed as you
would hope. Experts looking for
a more immersive experience
can also disable the HUD so
you’re relying solely on what
you can see in the cockpit.
If you’ve invested in a HOTAS
flight stick for Microsoft
Flight Simulator, that’ll come
in handy here too.
The VR-friendly design also
explains why the rest of the
game retains a first-person
perspective. You can’t walk
around during these moments,
unfortunately, and must instead
point to specific nodes to, say,
move from the hangar to the
briefing room. Still, it’s great to
be able to get a close look at an
X-Wing from different angles
in between missions.

Pilots, get your
headsets ready

“Beam me up, Scotty!
We only have 14 hours

to save the Earth!”

This is uncannily accurate,
based on all the real-life
spaceships we’ve blown up.
