SCOREBOARD

college football

BY HANK KURZ JR.

charlottesville — Brennan
Armstrong threw for 383 yards
and four touchdowns, and Vir-
ginia defeated Abilene Christian,
55-15, on Saturday night.
Armstrong completed just
16 passes, but the scoring throws
covered 28 yards to Tony Poljan,
90 yards to Lavel Davis Jr.,
56 yards to Keytaon Thompson
and 52 yards to Ra’Shaun Henry as
the Cavaliers made quick work of
their Southland Conference foe.
The play t o Davis came on the
last p lay of the first quarter. The
6-foot-7 freshman caught the ball
on a slant pattern and r an away
from cornerback Christopher Sat-
terfield for the 90-yard score.
“When he caught it, I didn’t
know where the corner was to get
him, but I thought he might be

gone,” Armstrong said, adding
that he has seen Davis do similar
in practice.
The Wildcats (1-5), who have
had two games canceled because
their scheduled opponents had
coronavirus-related issues, were a
late addition to Virginia’s slate
when other nonconference op-
tions fell through, and they were
clearly overmatched.
The Cavaliers (4-4) started
slowly, but a 33-yard run by Arm-
strong got them going, and his
28-yard pass to Poljan got them on
the board late in the first quarter.
Shane Simpson scored on a pair
of one-yard runs in the second
quarter, the second to cap a 6 4-yard
drive that used the last 30 seconds
of the half. It came after the Wild-
cats drove for their first points of
the night on Stone Earle’s two-yard
pass to Kobe Clark.
Earle was making his first start
and just his second appearance.
He finished 19 for 31 for 150 yards
and also ran 13 times for 20 yards.
In the second half, after two

passes by Armstrong broke for
long touchdowns, Virginia Coach
Bronco Mendenhall substituted
liberally.
“It was just really gratifying to
see smiles from so many players
that haven’t had a chance to play
this year in an actual game after
they’ve been practicing and labor-
ing and working to help their
teammate and this program move
forward,” Mendenhall said.
“To be able to get so many of
those guys into the game, that was,
I think, the best part of the game
for me.”
The game was the first played
under new, stricter attendance
standards established by the gov-
ernor because of a rise in coronavi-
rus cases. Instead of 1,000 fans,
only 250 were permitted inside
Scott Stadium.
Virginia goes on the road next
Saturday, playing Florida State.

Virginia’s Lavel Davis Jr. hauls in a pass and takes it 9 0 yards for a score in the first quarter Saturday.

helped Penix, from Tampa, to
2 7-for-51 passing for 491 yards
and five touchdowns with one
interception. It helped Fryfogle,
from Mississippi, to seven catches
for 218 yards and means his past
three games have gone like this:
25 receptions, 560 yards, and oh
my.
“A special, special player,” Allen
said.
Even with 607 yards for one
side (Ohio State) and 490 for the
other, this game that could have
wound up deepening the tedium
wound up hinging on three little
turns the Hoosiers might rue on a
ride back to Bloomington. One:
Ellis’s fumble inside the Ohio
State 10-yard line with three min-
utes left in the second quarter,
after which the Buckeyes moved
93 yards to lead 28-7 at halftime.
Two: Jamar Johnson’s intercep-
tion of a rare bad decision from
Fields in the third quarter, after
which Johnson raced inside the
Ohio State 20, after which Buck-
eyes wide receiver Julian Flem-
ing, in a smashing play, punched a
fumble loose. Three: Shaun
Wade’s 36-yard interception re-
turn for a touchdown of a rare
Penix mistake on a throw to the
right sideline, which pushed the
score to 42-21.
That wound up the difference,
and college football wound up
reserving its right to say you nev-
er know for sure, even if it seems
anymore that you do know often.
[email protected]

and those 30 plays, mostly mas-
terful, featured 13 runs, 17 passes
and mixed beauty.
It seemed Ohio State should
coast to whatever semblance of a
playoff will be conducted in this
pandemic year, but then maybe
20-year-old minds tend to let the
zeal ebb a bit when the score
stands 35-7.
A barrage of entertainment lat-
er, the game ended with the cam-
era catching Fields frowning.
Fields wound up saying, “I didn’t
play well, at all,” and, “I mean, of
course I made bad decisions.” He
wound up with three intercep-
tions, equal to the total this mae-
stro had in 14 games last season
set against 41 touchdown passes.
Those three wound up mattering
less than they might have, a
source of fret for one of those fan
bases so accustomed to wins that
it subjects narrow wins to thor-
ough dissection.
What’s going on with that sec-
ondary...?
“Almost 500 yards of offense, in
terms of passing, is too much,”
Ohio State Coach Ryan Day said.
To get from 35-7 to 42-21 and
then 42-35, Penix threw 63 yards
to Fryfogle in open terrain up the
middle for one touchdown,
33 yards to Fryfogle leaping over a
defender for another, 16 yards on
fourth and 10 to David Ellis for
another and 56 yards up the right
sideline to a dazzling Fryfogle for
the last score of the game, after
which 10:26 still remained. It all

c hallenging.... I think we’re get-
ting closer, closer all the time.”
Indiana (4-1) dazzled in wins
over Penn State, Rutgers, Michi-
gan and Michigan State with en-
thralling quarterback Michael
Penix Jr. and gobsmacking wide
receiver Ty Fryfogle. Yet when it
ventured to Columbus, it went up
against two goblins.
It rammed into the era of na-
tional branding when even the
great Californians or Hawaiians
might go all the way to Clemson
or Alabama and a top-rated quar-
terback in Texas announces (on
Thursday) he will head all the way
to Ohio State for that quarter-
backing tutelage. And it rammed
into the reality it had not beaten
Ohio State since 1988, when a
second straight win over the
Buckeyes became the first in
Bloomington since 1904, where-
upon quarterback Dave Schnell
told reporters: “I don’t think I
have any relatives who were even
living then or, I mean, any who
are alive now who were then.
Well, you know what I mean.”
Well, through the past two-
thirds of the second quarter to the
first possession beyond halftime,
Ohio State and virtuoso quarter-
back Justin Fields scored on four
consecutive possessions, none
cheap. The Buckeyes went
75 yards on seven plays, 76 on
eight, 93 on nine and 75 on six.
The score went from 7-7 to 35-7,

orlando — Cincinnati found it-
self in a four-quarter struggle for
the first time all season, and Des-
mond Ridder and the No. 7
Bearcats showed they can take a
punch.
Ridder threw two touchdown
passes and ran for two scores as
Cincinnati defeated Central Flori-
da, 36-33, on Saturday to head into
the release of the first College
Football Playoff rankings unbeat-
en.
The Bearcats (8-0, 6-0 Ameri-
can Athletic) fell behind 14-3 in the
first quarter against their tough-
est opponent yet but grabbed the
lead by halftime.

“What a hard, hard-fought
game,” Cincinnati Coach Luke
Fickell said. “That is a really good
football team that on senior night
gave us everything we could han-
dle.”
Dillon Gabriel threw for
243 yards and three touchdowns
with one interception as the
Knights (5-3, 4-3) lost at home for
the second time this season.
UCF took a 25-22 lead in the
third quarter with a 19-yard
touchdown pass from Gabriel to
Marlon Williams.
The interception Gabriel threw
was costly. Bearcats safety Darrick
Forest picked off Gabriel’s pass
early in the fourth quarter and
returned it 20 yards to the UCF 16.
Four plays later, a one-yard sneak
by Ridder gave Cincinnati a 29-25
lead with 13:07 remaining.
Ridder passed for 338 yards and
ran for 57.

Cincinnati used 10 plays to go
71 yards on its next possession to
go up two scores. The Bearcats
converted a fourth and one at the
UCF 26, and three plays later, Rid-
der threw a seven-yard touch-
down pass to Leonard Taylor for a
36-25 lead with 7:15 remaining.
“He’s just a baller. He shows up
ready to go every game,” Taylor
said of Ridder. “He’s a winner.”
UCF made it 36-33 with 4:27
remaining on a 10-yard touch-
down pass from Gabriel to Jaylon
Robinson and a two-point conver-
sion pass to Jacob Harris.
The Bearcats ran down all but
one second of the clock, trying not
to score near the goal line. An
errant snap on fourth down gave
everyone a jolt, but the ball was
recovered by Ridder. The Knights
got one play from their 8 that went
nowhere.
