FROM NEWS SERVICES
AND STAFF REPORTS

The Washington Football Team
on Saturday signed practice
squad defensive back Cole Luke to
the active roster and gave him a
two-year contract, an indication it
believes he could grow into a
larger role.
His signing comes as Washing-
ton’s secondary is being tested by
injuries, especially at safety:
Landon Collins is out for the sea-
son because of an Achilles’ injury,
and Deshazor Everett is out for at
least Sunday’s game against the
Cincinnati Bengals because of an
ankle injury.
Coach Ron Rivera has known
Luke since 2017, when the Caro-
lina Panthers signed him as an
undrafted free agent out of Notre
Dame. Although he has minimal
experience at the NFL level (he
has played only 16 defensive
snaps) and lacks the speed of most
true cornerbacks (he ran a
4 .64-second 40-yard dash at his
pro day), he has the potential to
play multiple spots. As a rookie in
2017, he took reps as Carolina’s
No. 1 nickelback in training camp
before landing on injured reserve
with an Achilles’ injury. Two years
later, he competed at free safety
and ended up playing in eight
games, though mostly on special
teams.
“He’s a smart, headsy player,”
Rivera told the Charlotte Observ-
er at the time. “He played some
corner, played some nickel for us.
Last year, we kept him on the
practice squad, working at the
safety position, and he’s shown
some aptitude for it.”
For Washington, Luke provides
depth in the secondary, though
it’s possible — at least initially —
that he plays mostly on special
teams. His potential to move
around bodes well for a team that
likes to use its defensive backs in a
variety of ways, depending on the
package and the opponent.

l BENGALS: Cincinnati
placed running back Joe Mixon
on injured reserve with a foot
injury, so backup Giovani Ber-
nard will start for the fourth
straight game when Cincinnati
faces Washington on Sunday.
l TITANS: Outside linebacker
Jadeveon Clowney was placed on
injured reserve as he deals with a
knee issue, meaning he must miss
at least three games.
The Titans also announced
that safety Kenny Vaccaro was
ruled out for Sunday’s game at
Baltimore with a concussion.

l (^) LIONS: Detroit downgraded
defensive linemen Austin Bryant
and Da’Shawn Hand, ruling out
both for Sunday’s game at Caro-
lina. Bryant has a thigh injury,
and Hand has a groin injury.
l BROWNS: Cleveland will
have starting right tackle Jack
Conklin and kicker Cody Parkey
on Sunday against Philadelphia
after both were activated from the
covid-19 reserve list.
Fullback Andy Janovich and
offensive lineman Chris Hubbard
will miss Sunday’s game as they
remain on the covid-19 reserve list
after testing positive for the virus.
l CHARGERS: Los Angeles
placed linebacker Kyzir White on
the covid-19 reserve list and called
up three players — linebackers
B.J. Bello and Cole Christiansen
and safety Jaylen Watkins — from
the practice squad.
l RAIDERS: Safety Johnathan
Abram, defensive tackle Maliek
Collins, defensive tackle Johna-
than Hankins, cornerback Isaiah
Johnson, defensive end Arden
Key and defensive tackle Kendal
Vickers all were activated off the
covid-19 reserve l ist after they
missed practice this week as “high
risk” close contacts to a teammate
who had tested positive.
l (^) JETS: New York placed cor-
nerback Bless Austin on injured
reserve after he injured his neck
in practice Wednesday. He sat out
Thursday, had an MRI exam and
was cleared to practice Friday.
l JAGUARS: Jacksonville acti-
vated veteran cornerback D.J.
Hayden from injured reserve and
expect him to play significantly
against Pittsburgh on Sunday.
The Jaguars waived safety Doug
Middleton to make room on the
roster.
l RAMS: Los Angeles will use
its third kicker in four weeks
when it visits Tampa Bay on Mon-
day night, and former Buccaneers
kicker Matt Gay appears to be the
choice. Although Coach Sean
McVay declined to publicly con-
firm his choice between Gay and
practice squad member Austin
MacGinnis, the team added Gay
to the active roster Saturday.
