XV. Fractions Greater Than or Equal to 1

A fraction that is greater than or equal to 1 has its numerator greater
than or equal to the denominator. This type of number is sometimes
called an.


You can express an improper fraction as a whole number or a mixed number.

To rename a mixed numberas a fraction:


  • Multiply the denominator by the whole number.

  • Add the product to the numerator.

  • Write the sum as the numerator and the given
    denominator as the denominator.


Rename as a mixed number.

Torename a fraction greater than 1as a mixed number:


  • Divide the numerator by the denominator.
    Write the quotient as the whole number part.

  • If there is a remainder, write it over the denominator.
    Express the fraction in simplest form.
