Lesson 1B Measures of Central Tendency 495

  1. GRAPHIC NOVEL Refer to the graphic novel frame below. Compare and
contrast the mean, median, and mode of the data from the two cities.
Round to the nearest tenth if necessary.

Refer to the data in the
graphic novel at the
beginning of
the chapter.

  1. MATH IN THE MEDIA Find a data set in a newspaper or magazine, on
television, or on the Internet. Which measure of central tendency best
represents the data? Justify your selection and then find the measure.

  2. GYMNASTICS Rama needs an average score of 9.5 from 5 judges to win a
gymnastics meet. The mean score from 4 judges was 9.48. What is the
lowest score Rama can get from the 5th judge and still win?

1919 MINERALS The Mohs Hardness Scale is used to identify the hardness of a
mineral. A mineral with a hardness of 1 on the scale, such as talc, is the
softest, while a mineral with a hardness of 10, such as a diamond, is the
hardest. What is the mean hardness of a group of minerals with the
following hardness levels: 3, 5, 8, 2, 1, 1, 7, 3, 9, 2, 3, 10?

  1. SCIENCE Mr. Gallaher’s science class was observing the effects of fertilizer
on plants. The results are shown in the table. Find the mean for each data
set to the nearest tenth. Compare your results with the mean of all the
data. How does combining the data affect the mean?
