Meaning of Volume

A cereal box or a box of tissues is shaped like a prism. A prism is a
three-dimensional figure with at least three rectangular lateral faces
and top and bottom faces that are parallel. The top view of a
rectangular prism is shown below.

Build a prism 1 unit high with the same top view as
above. Find its volume.

The prism uses 8 centimeter cubes.

So, the volume is 8 cubic centimeters.

Build a prism 2 units high with the same top view as
above. Find its volume.

The prism uses 16 centimeter cubes.

So, the volume is 16 cubic centimeters.

the Results

  1. What is the volume of a prism that is 10 units high with the same
    top view as above?

  2. What is the area of the top view? Justify your reasoning.

  3. Write an expression for the volume of a prism with this top view
    and height h.

  4. MAKE A CONJECTURE Write a method for finding the volume of any
rectangular prism given its dimensions. Justify your answer.

  5. Find an object that is a rectangular prism.
    a. Measure the dimensions.
    b. Estimate the volume of the object.
    c. Calculate the volume of the object. Compare to your estimate.

Main Idea
Justify formulas for the
volume of prisms.
