Volume of Prisms

  1. If you observed the Great Pyramid in Egypt and the Inner Harbor
and Trade Center in Baltimore from directly above, what geometric
    figures would you see?

  2. What is the formula for the area of a square? a rectangle?

The volume of a three-dimensional figure

6 cm

2 cm
is the measure of space it occupies. It is
measured in cubic units such as cubic
centimeters (cm^3 ) or cubic inches (in^3 ).

There are
two layers.

The bottom
layer, or base,
has 6 6 or
36 cubes.

It takes 2 layers of 36 cubes to fill the box. So, the volume of the box is
72 cubic centimeters.
The figure above is a rectangular prism. A rectangular prism is a
prism that has rectangular bases.

Volume of a Rectangular Prism

Words The volume V of a rectangular
prism is the product of the length ,
the width w, and the height h. It is
also the area of the base B times
the height h.
