Convert Measurements

PART A BCD EF

Multi-Part
Lesson 1

GLE 0706.4.2
Apply proportionality to
converting among different
units of measurements to
solve problems involving
rates such as motion at a
constant speed.
GLE 0706.4.4 Understand
and use ratios, derived
quantities, and indirect
measurements. Also
addresses GLE 0706.1.7.

Main Idea
Convert units of
measure between the
customary and metric
systems.

Convert Between Systems

RACES Races are often measured in
kilometers. A 5K race is 5 kilometers.

  1. How many meters long is
    the race?

  2. One mile is approximately
    1.6 kilometers. About how
    many miles is the race?

To convert measures between customary units and metric units, use
the relationships below.

Customary and Metric Relationships

Type of Measure Customary Metric

Length

1 inch (in.) ≈ 2.54 centimeters (cm)
1 foot (ft) ≈ 0.30 meter (m)
1 yard (yd) ≈ 0.91 meter (m)
1 mile (mi) ≈ 1.61 kilometers (km)

Weight/Mass

1 pound (lb) ≈ 453.6 grams (g)
1 pound (lb) ≈ 0.4536 kilogram (kg)
1 ton (T) ≈ 907.2 kilograms (kg)

Capacity

1 cup (c) ≈ 236.59 milliliters (mL)
1 pint (pt) ≈ 473.18 milliliters (mL)
1 quart (qt) ≈ 946.35 milliliters (mL)
1 gallon (gal) ≈ 3.79 liters (L)

Convert Between Measurement Systems

Convert 17.22 inches to centimeters. Round to the nearest
hundredth if necessary.
Since 2.54 centimeters ≈ 1 inch, multiply by _2.54 cm
1 in.
.

17.22 ≈ 17.22 in. · _2.54 cm
1 in.
Multiply by _2.54 cm1 in.^. Divide out common units.

≈ 43.7388 cm Simplify.
So, 17.22 inches is approximately 43.74 centimeters.
