GLE 0706.4.2
Apply proportionality to
converting among different
units of measurements to
solve problems involving
rates such as motion at a
constant speed.
GLE 0706.4.4 Understand
and use ratios, derived
quantities, and indirect
measurements.
Main Idea
Convert units of
measure between
dimensions including
area and volume.

bedroom. His bedroom is 15 feet long
and 12 feet wide. While shopping, he
notices carpet is sold in square yards.
- How many feet are in one yard?
- How many yards long is the room?
- How many yards wide is the room?
- What is the area of the room in square yards?
You can use the formula for the area of a square, A = s^2 , to find the
number of square feet in one square yard.
Convert Area Measurements
Convert one square yard to square feet.
A square yard is a square with a side length of one yard. You know
that one yard is equal to three feet. So, one square yard is a square
with side length of three feet.
A = s^2 Write the formula.
A = 32 Replace s with 3.
A = 9 Simplify.

So, one square yard is equal to
9 square feet.
Convert one square meter to square centimeters.
A square meter is a square with a side length of one meter. You
know that one meter is equal to 100 centimeters. So, one square
meter is a square with side length of 100 centimeters.
A = s^2 Write the formula.
A = 1002 Replace s with 100.
A = 10,000 Simplify.
So, one square meter is equal to 10,000 square centimeters.
