Congratulations!Congratulations!
Projects
- Estimate each leaf’s surface area and volume and record
it in the table. Find the ratio of the surface area of the leaf
to its volume. Write a few sentences comparing the data
presented in the table for the different types of leaves. - Use the Internet and research why leaves are flat and
why surface area and volume ratios are important to a
leaf. Write 1–2 paragraphs discussing the information
you found about the anatomy of leaves. - Create a graphic organizer that will summarize all of your information
and data. Use this in a presentation for your class. Include leaf samples
and the calculations that go along with your work.
Making the Connection
Use the information collected about leaves as needed to help in
these investigations.
Science
Write a brochure detailing facts about the leaves you found and the trees
they come from. Be sure to include the names of the leaves and trees and
the volume and surface area of the leaves.
Art
Draw the leaves you have collected. Use a technique that will help to make
the leaves look realistic.
Language Arts
In the fall, many people rake leaves and place them in bags for yard
waste. These bags are then collected curbside. Research and write an
essay describing what happens to these bags of yard waste.
- Use a spreadsheet to calculate
the surface area and volume. - Use publishing software to make
your graphic organizer.
You have successfully completed your botanist
tasks! Using your mathematical tools, you have
witnessed the power and importance of mathematics
in the real world. Surface area and volume are all
around us in all that we do. Keep up the good work!
