Perfect Squares

AREA The rug in Michaela’s
bedroom is in the shape of a square and has
an area of 36 square feet. How long is the
length of one side of the rug?

What do you need to find? the side length of the rug

Construct a square using 36 tiles.

Count the total number of tiles for one side.

So, the length of each side of Michaela’s rug is 6 feet.

Determine if you can construct a square using 4, 9, 12, 16, 18,
and 20 tiles.

Try to construct a square using 4 tiles, 9 tiles, and
16 tiles.

Try to construct a square using 12 tiles, 18 tiles, and
20 tiles.

the Results

  1. Refer to Activity 2. Which of the tile groups form squares?

  2. Construct a square using 100 tiles. What are the lengths of the
    sides of the square?

  3. Name two other tile groups that can be used to construct a square.

  4. MAKE A CONJECTURE What is the relationship between the lengths
of the sides and the areas of the squares?

Main Idea
Identify perfect
squares.
