Multi-Part Lesson Review

Expressions

Powers and Exponents (Lesson 1A)
Evaluate each expression.

  1. 35 10. 51 11. 182

  2. PATHS At the edge of a forest, there are
two paths. At the end of each path, there
are two more paths. At the end of each of
those paths, there are two more paths.
How many paths are there at the end?

EXAMPLE 1 Evaluate 4^5.
The base is 4. The exponent 5 means that 4
is used as a factor 5 times.
45 = 4 · 4 · 4 · 4 · 4

Numerical and Algebraic Expressions (Lessons 1B and 1C)
Evaluate each expression.

  1. 48 ÷ 6 + 2 · 5 14. 9 + 3(7 - 5)^3
Evaluate each expression if a = 10 and
    b = 4.

  2. (a - b)^2 16. (b + a)^2 ÷ 2

  3. CLOTHING Write an expression that
represents the cost in dollars of buying
any number of hats and any number of
shirts. Then find the cost of buying 3 hats
    and 5 shirts.

$5.75

EXAMPLE 2 Evaluate 24 - (8 ÷ 4)^4.
24 - (8 ÷ 4)^4 = 24 - 24 Divide 8 by 4.
= 24 - 16 Find the value of 2^4.
= 8 Subtract.

EXAMPLE 3 Evaluate 2m^2 - 5 n if m = 4
and n = 3.
2 m^2 - 5 n = 2 (4)^2 - 5 (3) Replace m with 4
and n with 3.
= 2(16) - 5(3) Find the value of 4^2.
= 32 - 15 Multiply.
= 17 Subtract.

Properties (Lesson 1D)
Evaluate each expression mentally. Justify
each step.

  1. (25 × 15) × 4 19. 14 + (38 + 16)

  2. ROSES Wesley sold roses for $2 a rose. He
sold 15 roses on Monday and 12 roses on
Tuesday. Use the Distributive Property to
mentally find the total amount Wesley
    earned. Explain.

EXAMPLE 4 Evaluate 8 + (17 + 22)
mentally. Justify each step.
8 + (17 + 22)
= 8 + (22 + 17) Commutative Property of Addition
= (8 + 22) + 17 Associative Property of Addition
= 30 + 17 or 47 Add 30 and 17 mentally.
