Le Chatelier’s Principle
The Effects of Substrate Concentration on Equilibrium
Look at this equilibrium.
A + B C + D
On the left side of the equilibrium equation, we find A and B. On the right side,
we find C and D. A and B act together to produce C and D; meanwhile, C and D
act together to produce A and B.
If we add more A to the reaction system, the reaction will shift to the right, to
produce more C and D at equilibrium.
If we add more B to the reaction, the reaction will shift to the right, to produce
more C and D at equilibrium.
Adding more A and B, of course, will also increase the production of C and D.
