Roman Numerals


The ancient Romans used letters to write numbers.

Use these rules to read and write Roman numerals:


  • When letters that stand for lesser numerals come
    afterletters that stand for greater numerals, add.
    III 1  1  1  3
    VIII 5  3  8
    LVIII 50  8  58

  • When a letter that stands
    for a lesser numeral comes
    beforea letter that stands for
    a greater numeral, subtract.
    IV 5  1  4
