5.4 Reciprocal ratios EMA3Q

Each of the three trigonometric ratios has a reciprocal. The reciprocals: cosecant (cosec), secant (sec) and
cotangent (cot), are defined as follows:

cosec=

1

sin
sec=

1

cos
cot=

1

tan

We can also define these reciprocals for any right-angled triangle:

cosec=

hypotenuse
opposite

sec=

hypotenuse
adjacent

cot=

adjacent
opposite

Note that:

sincosec= 1
cossec= 1
tancot= 1
