Solve It: Fishy Prices
1.Look: Facts are given
about the prices of fish. From
Fact C we know that Glow
costs the least. The least
number is $2, so Glow costs
$2. To figure out Barb’s cost,
add $7 to Glow’s cost. For
Shaggy’s cost, we need to sub-
tract $4 from Barb’s cost.
2.Plan and Do: Work back-
ward. Fact C: Glow costs $2.
Fact B: Barb is $2 + $7, or $9.
Fact A: Shaggy’s cost is
$9 – $4, or $5.
3.Answer and Check: Shaggy
cost $5. Barb cost $9. Glow
cost $2. Check the clues:
$9 = $7 + $2, so Facts B and C
check. $9 – $4 = $5, so Facts,
A and B check.

Solve It: Guess the Number
1.Look: There is a list of
numbers 0 – 39. There are 3
clues about the number Z.
The problem is to use the
clues to figure out the num-
ber that is shown by Z.
2.Plan and Do: Choose the
clue to use first. Clue 1 elimi-
nates the greatest number of
numbers. Clue 1 eliminates
all numbers except for 20
through 34. Clue 3 eliminates
all numbers except 26
through 34. Then Clue 2
eliminates all numbers
except for 30.
3.Answer and Check: 30.
Check 30 with each clue.
Clue 1: The number 30 is
between 19 and 25. Clue 2:
You say 30 when you count
by 10s. Clue 3: 30 is greater
than 25.
