Solve It: How Much Is This


Bag?


1.Look: Three bags. In the


bag for 40¢, there are 4


bananas. The second bag has


one pear for 12¢. The third


bag has one apple for 10¢,


The problem is to figure out


the cost of the bag with one


banana, one pear, and one


apple.


2.Plan and Do: In the first


bag, the 4 bananas are 40¢,


so one banana is 10¢. To find


the cost of the bag with one


banana, one pear, and one


apple, add the costs of the


three fruits: 10¢ + 12¢ + 10¢


= 32¢.


3.Answer and Check: 32¢. To


check, replace each banana


with 10¢, and check the total


cost of the 4 bananas with the


number of cents shown on


the bag’s tag. Then check the


addition of the costs of the


three fruits. In the addition,


add the two prices that are


each 10¢ (10¢ + 10¢ = 20¢);


then add 12¢ to that total


(20¢ + 12¢ = 32¢).
