Pre-Algebra Demystified

(Marvins-Underground-K-12) #1
EXAMPLE

Divide 38.27 by 43.

SOLUTION
: 89
43 Þ 38 : 27
344
387
387
0
Sometimes it is necessary to place zeros in the quotient.

EXAMPLE
Divide 0.0035 by 7.

SOLUTION
: 0005
7 Þ 0 : 0035
35
0
Case 2. When the divisor contains a decimal point, move the point to the right of
the last digit in the divisor. Then move the point to the right the same number of
places in the dividend. Divide and place the point in the quotient directly above
the point in the dividend.

EXAMPLE
Divide 14.973 by 0.23.

SOLUTION
0 : 23 Þ 14 : 973
Move the point two places to the right as shown:
65 : 1
23 Þ 1497 : 3
138
117
115
23
23
0
Sometimes it is necessary to place zeros in the dividend.
