Changing Mixed Numbers to

Improper Fractions

A mixed number can be changed to an equivalent improper fraction. For
example, 5^18 is equal to^418.
To change a mixed number to an improper fraction, multiply the whole
number by the denominator of the fraction and add the numerator of the frac-
tion to the product. Use this number for the numerator and use the same
denominator as the denominator of the improper fraction.

EXAMPLE

SOLUTION

Multiply 7 by 3, then add 2 to get 23, which is the numerator of the improper
fraction. Use 3 as the denominator of the improper fraction.
