CHAPTER 11. 2D AND3D WAVEFRONTS 11.6

For the Concorde this means that

sin θ =

340

647

θ = sin−^1

340

647

θ = 31. 7 o

Aircraft speed at altitude speed at altitude Mach Cone Angle
(km· h−^1 ) (m· s−^1 ) (degrees)
Concorde 2 330 647 31.7
Gripen 2 410 669
Mirage F1 2 573 715
Mig 27 1 885 524
F 15 2 660 739
F 16 2 414 671

Now calculate the MachCone Angles for the other aircraft in the table.

Chapter 11 — Summary

See the summary presentation ( Presentation: VPqyv at http://www.everythingscience.co.za)

  • Huygen’s Principle states that every point ona wavefronts acts as a source of
    waves radiating isotropically.

  • Constructive interference occurs when two waves combine to form a larger dis-
    turbance.

  • Destructive interference occurs when two waves combine to form a smaller dis-
    turbance.

  • When a wave passes through a slit, diffraction of the wave occurs. Diffraction of
    the wave is when the wavefront spreads out or ”bends” around corners.

  • A sonic boom or shockwave is formed whenan object moves fasterthan the
    speed of sound in a medium due to constructiveinterference.
