LEAD ADVICE
I enjoy Your Dog Magazine
very much. I wondered if you
could advise people who use
the hand-held extending leads
that many of them are not using
the leads correctly. They should

set a short, normal length on
pavements, then only use fully
extended leads in parks and
of -road on footpaths. I have
seen people with mobility
scooters using these leads,
which can be dangerous as the

scooter rider may lose control of
the scooter and the dog.
A normal dog collar/harness
and lead should be used when
taking a dog for a walk with
a scooter.

I

would like to tell you about the joy and
happiness that having my beautiful Jack
Russell, Cindy, has brought me. She was
bought for me as a present in October 2017.
I had spoken with a dear friend and had
discussed the possibility of me having
a companion dog. Little did I know that two
weeks later, I would have a beautiful little
girl, my princess Cindy, eight weeks old.
It’s true that Jack Russells can be
challenging for those who have not had
any experience of dog ownership, but I had
owned two dogs previously both of whom
had lived long and happy lives.
My Cindy is an assertive little girl, but
I like her quirky character and her energetic
approach to life; she helps keep me young.
I am 63 years of age and the responsibility of
giving her regular exercise has been a great
benei t to me. She has many entertaining
traits and habits and she always makes me
laugh, even when I chastise her.
A habit that she has recently acquired is
opening my handbag and looking for treats.
Occasionally, I have lunch with a friend
and if Cindy is not with me, I will always save
something to take home for her — chicken,
or steak. She has, like all dogs, an extremely
strong sense of smell and can always detect
if I have arrived home with something for her
in my handbag.

If I am careless and do not place it in an
out-of-reach location, she will pick up my
handbag when my back is turned or I am out
of the room, and take it outside. She will then
open the clasp and help herself to the treat.
The i rst time she did this caused me some
consternation. I thought I had lost my bag.
After a thorough search of all the rooms in
my house, I happened to look out over the
garden and noticed something sticking
out from under the rhododendron. On
examination, it was evident that she had
eaten the contents and hidden the evidence!
I also found an old mobile phone, which
had gone missing several months earlier,
and my lipstick. Unless she had a hot date in
mind, I can’t think why these items would be
of interest to her. Needless to say I am now
more vigilant and ensure that anything to do
with my handbag is strictly out of her reach!
I love the magazine.
