Ethernet

A 1 .1 Ethernet in relation to the TCP/IP Model A 1 -


Ethernet is an example of protocols included in the TCP/IP suite.
It's at the Network Interface Layer in TCP/IP model, [28], as shown in
figure A 1 .1:

A 1 .2 Ethernet Frame Format
The Ethernet frame contains seven fields: preamble, SFD, DA,
SA, length or type of protocol data unit (PDU), upper-layer data, and the
CRC. Ethernet does not provide any mechanism for acknowledging
received frames, making it what is known as an unreliable medium.
Acknowledgments must be implemented at the higher layers [28]. The
format of the MAC (Media Access Control) frame is shown in Figure A 1 .2:
