CHAPTER THREE

Planning, Design and Simulating of the Modern SCADA System

3.1 Introduction
This chapter demonstrates the design procedureof a modern
SCADA system using long haul Ethernetas the carrying network for
transferring the control signals of an electrical distribution system in
Nineveh governorate. In the beginning, we suggest a certain planning
procedure which is followed to build an efficient network using prime
algorithm (minimum spanning tree) considering cost, performance, and
reliability, assigning capacities for each link and determining a route for
each communicating node pair. The OPNET package is used to build the
different models which reflect real working conditions. The network is
supplied with different applications and services such as (SCADA data
packets, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Video streaming, Voice Over IP
(VOIP) and Telnet). The goal of this study is to investigate the effect of the
different parameters on the system performance (throughput, delay,
response time, etc.) and to evaluate the advantages of using Industrial
Ethernet as the backbone of such systems. These steps are followed by
designingthe system using the WMN network and DSR as one of its
protocols as a wireless backup network for adding redundancy in case of
any server failure in the network system.

3. 2 Principles of Power Systems

An understanding of basic design principles is essential inthe
operation of electric power systems. These systems consist of electric
powergeneration, transmission, and distribution systems (primary and
secondary) [ 64 ].Figure 3.1 shows a one-line diagramof a typical electrical
power generation, transmission, and distribution system [65].
