Analysis and Design of a Modern SCADA System

(fajer) #1

Ethernet communication mediaand add Various methods of redundancy
which improve reliability and robustness of the system.
This thesis adoptstwo methodologies to achieve the above goals:-

  1. Wired network, in which a number of steps is considered:
    a. Determining each substation location in GPS (Global
Positioning System), on Ninevehmap using Google earth
    software [87].
    b. Deciding the network layout; i.e.substationsconnections with
each other, where Mosul 400 substation is the central station and
the other substations must be able to communicate with it using
    Prim’s algorithm.
    c. Choosing the suitable cable types (transmission media), which
    are used for connecting them.
    d. Adding redundant paths and dual links to the designed network
to improve the reliability and increase its robustness.
    e. Building the network simulation model, this reflects the real
operation of the SCADA system by using the OPNET package.

2. Wireless network;in this thesis, the wireless mesh network (WMNs) is
used, where the substations are connected by a WMN that
providesanother method of redundancy to the wired network. Four
steps are considered to implementit:
a. Selecting the properrouting protocol in terms of high
throughput, less overheads and a minimum delay.
b. Selecting suitable IEEE 802.11 standard where
transmission power and received power are calculatedto fit
the network applications and stations distances.
c. Build the wireless network simulation model using
OPNET tool.
