Analysis and Design of a Modern SCADA System

CHAPTER FOUR

Practical Implementation of the Suggested SCADA System

4.1 Introduction
In this thesis the suggested implementation of the SCADA
system using NI instruments and LabView software includes selecting two
substations each with two feeders (33, 11Kv) and connect them to a server,
one by wire connection and the other by wireless technology. Those
substations send a file of status signals every 30 sec to the server, which in
turn responses by displaying those signals and replays by control messages
to fix any problem that may occur.

4.2 National Instruments (NI) Systems

The national Instruments LabVIEW provides an intuitive
software development environment designed to help in developing scalable
networked control systems with any kind of measurements, analysis or
algorithm development, and I/O, from simple to complex applications. The
LabVIEW platform of software products provides powerful tools for
sophisticated monitoring, data logging, supervisory control, PID control,
fuzzy logic, single point analysis, control prototyping tools, machine
vision, and more. National Instruments offer five LabVIEW based
Programmable Automation Controllers (PAC) platforms, type 6 is used in
this thesis, refer to Appendex-A3 [ 81 ], [ 82 ].

  1. 3 Introduction to LabVIEW:
    LabVIEW (Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering
Workbench) is a graphical programming language that uses icons instead
of lines of text to create applications [ 83 ]. In contrast to text-based
programming languages, where instructions determine the order of program
execution, LabVIEW uses dataflow programming, where the flow of data
