Fashion Photography

And Portraiture
By Terry Sullivan

LookingForward

W

e’ll be covering both fashion photography and
portrait photography in our next issue.
What’s intriguing to see is that while there are vast
differences in both genres, they’ve also been affected
by technology but in different ways. For instance,
social media has upended some of the old-guard fash-
ion influencers. The public isn’t waiting around to see
what Vog u e magazine says to find out what’s trending.
They’re experiencing it in real time on Instagram.
On the other hand, portraiture, whether com-
mercial or fine art, isn’t looking to new influencers.
However, selfies and mobile devices have made today’s
subjects the most self-conscious and image-conscious

subjects of any era. In other words, social media has
sucked portraiture into its vortex, for better or for
worse, allowing subjects to be very cognizant of pho-
tography and how they appear in photos.
But there are perhaps some less-noticeable changes
taking place in the gear photographers use, particularly
at the high end. In some cases, new lighter, speedier
and more versatile lenses are allowing photographers
to shoot with more accurate tracking and quicker
autofocusing features. And lighting gear has contin-
ued to improve and include easier-to-use features.
We’ll be checking out these trends and more in the
next issue. Stay tuned. DPP

lens, which includes a special lens element to help produce a softer background bokeh.
