Simplifying Roots


Exponent and root properties can be used to simplify roots in the same way
canceling is used to simplify fractions. For instance, we normally wouldn’t leave
25 without simplifying it as 5, any more than we would leave^124 without simpli-
fying it as 3. In nam, if m is at least as large as n, then nam can be simplified using
Property 10 ()nnab= abn and Property 13 ()naan=. For example, if we are
simplifying a square root, we write the quantity under the radical symbol as the
product of a square and something else.
