WORKSHEET 2.19: CONVERTING FROM ONE UNIT
OF MEASUREMENT TO ANOTHER USING
THE MULTIPLICATION PROPERTY OF ONE
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can convert from one unit of measurement to another by multiplying by 1 where 1 is
expressed as the ratio of two equivalent measures. Follow the example and steps below:

EXAMPLE
Change 3 inches to yards.

  1. Write the number you want to convert, including the units, over 1.
    3 inches
    1

  2. Write another fraction. Place the unit that you are converting to in the numerator. Place
the unit you are converting from in the denominator.
    yards
    inches

  3. Include the numbers that relate these units.
    1yard
    36 inches

  4. Multiply the fraction you wrote in step 1 by the fraction in step 3.

one, you multiply. Do you agree? Explain your answer by providing
examples.
