WORKSHEET 1.13: CLASSIFYING COUNTING NUMBERS,
WHOLE NUMBERS, AND INTEGERS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Numbers can be classified into various groups. Three of the most important groups are
shown below:
- Counting numbers:These are the numbers we count with. Starting with 1, they continue
forever by adding 1 to the previous number: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,... - Whole numbers:Zero and the counting numbers make up the whole numbers: 0, 1, 2, 3,
4, 5,... - Integers:Negative and positive whole numbers and zero make up the integers:
...−3,−2,−1, 0, 1, 2, 3,...
Most numbers belong to more than one of the groups above. For example, 3 is a counting
number, a whole number, and an integer. But− 3 is only an integer.
DIRECTIONS: Classify the numbers below as counting numbers, whole numbers, and
integers. Some numbers may be members of more than one group.
15 − 810 − 10
− 7 4 12 3 − 1
23 154 − 30 752 19
CHALLENGE:Give at least three examples of how negative numbers may
be used.
