Polynomial
Any expression that consists of a string of two or more monomials is called a
polynomial.
Here are some examples of polynomials:
-^1
2 + 5xy
8 x^2 y^3 +√–9 – 3
4 x– 6y^2 + 7xy^3 – π
Binomials
A polynomial that has only two terms, in other words an expression that consists of a
string of just two monomials, is also called a binomial. Here are some examples of
binomials:
(^1) / 2 + 5xy
(^1) / 2 x+ 3x
5 xy– 2xy
-^1 / 3 x+ 4x^2 y
Binomial Formulas
Difference of two cubes
x^3 – y^3 = (x–y)(x^2 +xy+y^2 )
Difference of two squares
x^2 – y^2 = (x+y)(x–y)
Sum of two cubes
x^3 +y^3 = (x+y)(x^2 – xy+y^2 )
Degree of a polynomial
The highest exponent in a polynomial is the degree of the polynomial.
-^1
2 x+ 5xy
(^2) +π the degree is 2
3 x^2 + 4y^3 the degree is 3
4 x^5 – 5xy^2 + 2x the degree is 5
Polynomials with varying degrees are often written with the highest degree first, so
3 x^2 + 4y^3 would instead be written as 4y^3 + 3x^2.
