There are seven Roman numerals that can represent any whole Arabic number by
properly placing the numerals next to each other. There are a few simple rules that
help convert the value of Roman numerals to Arabic:

Sum
If a numeral is followed by another numeral that is of lesservalue, they are read as a
sum. For example, in VI, the value of V (five) is followed by the value of I (one), and
their overall value is the sum of five and one, or six.

XVI 16
XXVI 26
LXVI 66

Difference
If the numeral is followed by another numeral that is of greatervalue, then they are
read as a difference. For example, in IV, the value of I (one) is followed by the value
of V (five), and their overall value is the difference, or four.
