SECOND-DEGREE EQUATION, an x^3 is a THIRD-DEGREE EQUATION,
anx^4 is a fourth-degree equation, x^5 is a fifth-degree equation, and
so on.
quotientThe total obtained from dividing one number by another number. For
example, in 14 ÷ 2 = 7, the total 7 is the quotient.
radical (root sign)The name for the symbol used for taking the ROOTof a
number, which looks like this: √
−
.
radicandThe number located under the RADICALsign. For example, in √−9, the
radicand is 9; in √
−
25, the radicand is 25, and in √
−
36, the radicand is
- This number is also sometimes called the base.
radii Two or more RADIUS.
radius ALINE SEGMENTthat extends from the center of a CIRCLEto any
point on the circle, or from the center of a REGULAR POLYGONto any
VERTEXof the polygon.
radix (base)The base of a number system. For example, in the DECIMAL
system, the radix, or base, is 10. In a binary system, the radix is 2.
ratio The relationship of one number to another, e xpressed as a
QUOTIENT. For example, the ratio of 2 to 4 is written as 2:4, or –^24 ,
which can be simplified to –^12. The two elements of the ratio, the
first TERMand the second term, are called the ANTECEDENTand
theCONSEQUENT, respectively.
rational numberAny INTEGER, or RATIOof integers, that can be written as a
FRACTION, as long as zero is not the DENOMINATOR. For example,–^34 ,
4,–^82 ,–^14 , .36.
real numberAny number, whether rational or irrational, that can be written
with a DECIMALand is not an IMAGINARY NUMBER.
reciprocalThe mirror image of a FRACTION, in which the NUMERATORand
DENOMINATORare inverted. For example, the reciprocal of –^13 is–^31 , the
reciprocal of^2 – 5 is–^52 , and so on.
