sphere A closed three-dimensional round SOLIDthat is, at all points,
EQUIDISTANTfrom the center.
See alsoSECTION IV CHARTS AND TABLES.

square 1. The second POWERof any number.
2.A right-angled PARALLELOGRAM(QUADRILATERAL) in which all
four sides are equal in length.
See alsoSECTION IV CHARTS AND TABLES.

squaredA base number that is multiplied by itself, or raised to the second
POWER. For example, 3 squared, written as 3^2 , is 3 ×3; 5^2 is 5 ×5;
102 is 10 ×10, and so on.

square rootAny number that is one of two exactly equal FACTORs of another
number. For example, 3 ×3 =9, so the square root of 9 is 3; 5 ×5 =
25, so the square root of 25 is 5; 6 ×6 =36, so the square root of 36
is 6, and so on. The symbol for square root, also called the RADICAL
sign, looks like this: √

.

straight angleAn ANGLEthat measures exactly 180°.

subset A subset is a SETin which all the elements of one set are included
in the elements of another set. For example, if A= {2, 4},
and B= {2, 4, 6, 8}, then Ais a subset of B.Also, if A= {2, 4, 6},
then Ais a subset of B,or if A= {2, 4, 6, 8}, then Ais a subset of B,
because in every instance, all of the elements of Aare included in
the elements of B.This is written as A#B,and is read as Ais
contained in B.

substituteTo replace one value or quantity with another.

subtrahendAny quantity or number that is subtracted from another quantity
or number. For example, in 365 – 14, the subtrahend is 14, and in 27y

  • x,the subtrahend is x.
