vertex 1. The common point from which two lines form an ANGLE.
- The point on a TRIANGLEthat is opposite the base of the triangle.
vertical anglesANGLEs on the opposite sides of a VERTEX, formed by two
lines intersecting.
vertical axisThe y-axis in a CARTESIAN COORDINATE SYSTEMgraph.
vertical lineA line on a GRAPHthat has no SLOPEand intersects the x-axis at
only one point.
volume The amount of space that a three-dimensional SOLIDoccupies. For
example, the solid space of a CUBE, acylinder, or a SPHEREis the
volume. Volume is measured in CUBIC UNITs.
See alsoSECTION IV CHARTS AND TABLES.
whole numberAny number that is not a FRACTION, beginning with zero.

x 1. A common VARIABLEused in algebra to signify an unknown quantity.
- The variable used to signify the HORIZONTAL LINEin a Cartesian
GRAPH(x-axis).
x-axis The HORIZONTAL AXIS(horizontal NUMBER LINE) in a CARTESIAN
COORDINATE SYSTEMgraph. POSITIVE NUMBERs are to the right of the
ORIGINon the x-axis, and NEGATIVE NUMBERs are to the left of the
origin on the x-axis.
x-interceptThe point on a GRAPHin which a LINE SEGMENTintersects the
x-axis, which is when y= 0.
