The development of technology would make the role of the physical environment much less
important. At this point, you could argue that geography and climate (including natural resources),
while important to the way in which a society develops or the directions that it takes, are not THE
determining factor in longevity. In early times, it was a response to the environment that partially
determined the success or failure of an empire; after the Industrial Revolution, however, society
could control the physical environment. In any case, in modern times, empires are no longer the
dominant model of governing.
