Patterns with Tenths, Hundredths,

Thousandths

3-6

Find the quotients. Use the patterns.

  1. 16 0.1 2. 329 0.1 3.5.80.1 4. 27.60.1
    16 0.01 329 0.01 5.80.01 27.60.01
    16 0.001 329 0.001 5.80.001 27.60.001

When you divide by 0.1, 0.01, or 0.001, the quotient increases
as the divisor decreases.

Mario used these patterns for dividing numbers
by 0.1, 0.01, and 0.001 to find the number of
tenths, hundredths, and thousandths in a
whole number or decimal.

34 000 .1 340 631. 8 000. 1 6318
34 00 .01 3400 631. 8 00 .0 1 63,18 0
34 0 .00134, 000 631. 8 0 .00 1 631,8 00

To divide by 0.1, 0.01, or 0.001:
Count the number of decimal places in the divisor.
Move the decimal point to the rightone place in
the dividend for each decimal place in the divisor.
Write zeros in the quotient as needed.

Study these examples.
4.3 6 0. 1 4 3. 6 1 decimal place in the divisor
Move 1 place to the right.

4.3 6 0 .0 14 3 6 2 decimal places in the divisor
Move 2 places to the right.

4.3 60 0 .0 0 14 3 6 0 3 decimal places in the divisor
Move 3 places to the right.
Write 1 zero.
