ANECDOTE OF THE JAR
BY WALLACE STEVENS
Wallace Stevens (1879-1955) was a high-ranking
executive at an insurance company while publishing
some of the most challenging verse of his day. He
won a Pulitzer Prize for his poetry in 1955. He has
been called a “poet of ideas,” who explores
consciousness, knowing, and the dynamic nature of
reality. Consequently, his poetry is often seen as
dense and difficult upon first glance.
