THEME FOR ENGLISH B
BY LANGSTON HUGHES
Langston Hughes (1902-1967) was a poet of
tremendous literary, cultural, and political significance
in twentieth century America. Associated with the
Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s, Hughes
was the voice of a generation of young African
Americans seeking better opportunities in the big
cities to which they had migrated from the Southern
states. Though primarily a poet, Hughes also wrote
articles and essays for popular periodicals about race
relations in America.
