CHICAGO

BY CARL SANDBURG

Carl Sandburg (1878-1967) worked a series of odd

jobs after leaving school at thirteen. He enlisted in the

military and was stationed in Puerto Rico during the

Spanish-American War. Much of his work, like his

most famous poem “Chicago,” celebrates the

midwestern landscape of his youth. He was one of

the twentieth century’s most popular poets at the time

of his death.
